On the road looking for apartments, so not much time for an update, but I wanted to call people's attention to this site, which lists the "10 Most Amazing Ghost Towns." It's interesting as an example of the many ways in which settlements become abandoned, and the various post-occupational lives they may experience. Many of the processes seen in the pictures are paralleled in excavations of ancient places. Archaeological deposits being created as we speak!

Thanks for the link! Some of these places were used in the interesting book "The World Without Us" as examples of how fast the transition from "inhabited" to "ruin" can be.
Glad to hear that there is another Penn fellow in the archy blogosphere, different departments, same interests. Great blog and great posts!

This post hit me in two areas--my childhood in Taiwan and my having been born in a part of California replete with ghost towns or towns on their way to being ghost towns. The link was great--doesn't it just make you want to either go live there, or to dig? The old dead Penn archaeologist in me wants to get my old Marshalltown trowel out, sharpen it up, and get to work.
only one question, is it Tarragona in your blog's photo??
Hey, did you find an apartment? No new posts since 2008 -- did you move?
